A road safety audit (RSA) is defined as "the formal safety performance examination of an existing or future road or intersection. It qualitatively estimates and reports on potential road safety issues and identifies opportunities for improvements in safety for all road users.

Road safety audits differ from conventional traffic safety studies in two key ways: road safety audits are often pro-active investigations, rather than reactive investigations of sites with histories of complaints or poor safety performance, and the investigation team is independent from the staff that is designing the project or maintains the road.

The road safety audit may investigate general safety conditions, or it may focus on specific concerns or users. Walkability audits concentrate on pedestrian safety and accommodation and transit audits focus on safety of bus and train users.

Traffic survey definition means to capture data that accurately reflects the real-world traffic situation in the area. It may be counting the number of vehicles using a road or collecting journey time information for example, but there are many other types of data that traffic surveys collect.

Importance of traffic surveys arises when it comes to transport planning, an essential basic requirement is obtaining a sound understanding of the actual conditions on the ground in order to predict what the conditions would be in the future. Often, the only way to achieve this is by obtaining an accurate measure of traffic (vehicle/pedestrian) numbers. This is often expanded to encapsulate vehicle types and speeds.
